Started in 1994, Westmoore Community Church is dedicated to an informal style of worship, providing a concert environment for its patrons. The rapidly-expanding church currently runs three services for over 2,000 people on Sundays and is currently building a new 24,000 sq. ft. facility. When the current sanctuary first opened its doors in 2001, Youth Leader Scott Blair had just a few conventional lights and scrollers running from a small conventional console. The current Technical Director, Kevin Gress, started helping with the lighting in 2002 and then undertook the project to expand and upgrade the lighting system.
“I first learned about the Frog range from Zero 88 at a seminar in Dallas,” said Gress. “After I saw a demo, I knew it was a Frog lighting console that we needed.” Ultimately, Gress chose to put the largest of the Frog consoles into the Westmoore Community Church, the Bull Frog, in November of 2004. With its 24 submasters, 48 / 96 preset faders and control for up to 20 moving lights, the Bull Frog allows Gress and his team the ‘on the fly’ control that they require with the fast paced services and ever-changing set lists at Westmoore.
“I spent several months researching different lighting consoles, and the Bull Frog has not let me down one bit,” comments Gress. “The transition from our old lighting console was easy and learning the Bull Frog was a breeze. The easy setup and operation of the Bull Frog has made it simple to train others on both how to use the console and how to use the lighting system more effectively.”
Gress has recently added both ETC Revolution fixtures and Martin MAC 250 Entour fixtures to the lighting system at Westmoore. For Gress, having the Bull Frog means that his lighting console now enables, rather than limits, his creativity.
“We have had hit bands come to play concerts at the Church using our system,” says Gress with a certain amount of pride. “But more importantly, the new console and the new lights have accentuated our songs and dramas, making them more meaningful.”
