Creating a fixture definition with RDM ID info

Hi,

I've recently purchased some Adam Hall/Cameo Q-Spot 40 RGBW fixtures which have RDM support. On the ZerOS 7.9.4.40 beta thread Jon and I have been discussing RDM with this fixture:

I contacted Cameo/Adam Hall for the required RDM data since it's not specified in the product manual or on their support site and I'd like to include it in the fixture definitions I've written for this fixture.

They've got back to me (very quickly, <24hrs) with a response from their Technical Support Specialist, Markus Stein, with the following information:

Here is the RDM Code for the CLQS40RGBW:
Product: CL Q-Spot 40 RGBW
Man ID: 0x08A4
Brand ID: 0
Supplier ID: 0
Product ID: 22
Item ID: 0000 -> FFFF

So my next question is, how do I translate these into the fields required in the Fixture Editor? I can work out the Manufacturer ID 😋 but what about the other fields? The Fixture Editor has: ESTA Manufacturer ID (08A4), RDM Device Model ID and RDM Personality ID.

Thanks!

Hi Kevin,

I'm going to guess what they call "Product ID" is our RDM Device Model ID. It looks like they have provided that in decimal, and we require the Hex. 22 is therefore 0x0016, so I reckon try typing 0016 in the Model ID box.

There doesn't seem to be any indication of Personality ID in that information - if the fixture has 4 modes for example I would expect each channel mode to be given a unique value from 1-4.

This may have to therefore be trial and error. If the manual refers to them as "Mode x", then number each mode using this number. If not, a good place to start is number the modes in the order they are listed in the manual.

Let me know if you have any queries,

Edward

Hi Edward. Thanks for the insight. Regarding the channel modes (yes there are 4: 2, 3m1, 3m2 and 9), so I guess I’m putting 1, 2, 3 or 4 in the Personality ID field?

I’ll have a play tonight with your info and see if I get anywhere. At the moment when I do RDM auto discover on the FLX I get the 2 channel mode (pretty useless) even if I try to force a higher mode on the fixture.

Cheers! Kevin

Yes that's correct. I reckon numbered in the order you list will be correct.

That sounds as if the 2 channel mode is Personality ID 1 then. Let me know how you get on.

After quite a bit of mucking around I still didn't get this to work adequately. I could still only get the desk to RDM patch 2 channel mode with the "desk default" channels created under Beamshape, so clearly there is some ID data issue there. Will aim to have another play with this when I'm through the shows I have June/July. I might have to go back to Adam Hall if I can't get 9ch to work...

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for letting me know. Yes- sounds like either the code in the fixture file is incorrect, or the code the fixture is reporting is incorrect - either way when the console is detecting the fixture, it isn’t finding a fixture file in the library with matching RDM data, and is therefore creating its own basic one.

If the fixture is set in the higher channel mode, I would expect FLX to detect this higher channel mode and patch it- unless the fixture is only giving information for the 2 channel mode over RDM. Out of interest, when the 2 channel mode is discovered and patched into FLX automatically, is the mode changed remotely on the fixture from the higher channel count to the 2 channel mode?

Yes it is. I set the fixture using its menu/buttons to 9ch mode. When FLX patched it, it got changed to the 2ch mode:
