Using 3pin & 5pin at same time?

Hi. I’m currently running our conventional lights via the 5pin output to the dimmer packs, then a 5-3pin adaptor to connect to the LED lights. I was wondering, seeing as the FLX S48 has both 3pin & 5pin outputs, could I use the 5pin as normal, but connect the LED lights via the 3pin output directly without having to use an adapter?

Ciao Rob

Yes that’s correct, both the 5 pin and 3 pin XLR connectors output DMX. If you have a 1 universe FLX S48, both ports will output universe 1. If you have a 2 universe FLX S48, the 3 pin will by default output universe 2. This can however be configured in SETUP -> Universes.

Hope this helps,

This was in a post November last year, useful to have RDM and Non RDM outputs.

FLX S has two outputs - a 3pin and a 5pin. If you have a 1 Universe FLX S, by default both ports will output the same DMX data, but the 5pin will include RDM and the 3pin won't include RDM. This behavior can be changed in SETUP > Inputs & Outputs.

Hello,

As @DALX mentions, by default the 5 pin DMX port will have RDM enabled, and the 3 pin port won't.

In recent software versions, RDM settings can be found in SETUP -> Universes.

That should be the case. Actually 512 channels anywhere across 64 universes (I believe FLX S had ArtNert/sACN too).

Yes, we have been told that but I thought I would sanity check it as the FLX manual  has a much more simplistic statement for FLX S models though on page 226:-

DMX output
Two female Neutrik XLR are provided. 1 x 5 pin connector, and 1 x 3pin connector. These both output Universe 1, unless the FLX S console has been upgraded to 2 universes.

On this page:

https://www.zero88.com/control/flxs

Under this section:

Features (both consoles)

It has:

  • Channels patchable across 64 Universes

In the manual:

https://www.zero88.com/manuals/zeros/patching/available-channels

It says:

On all ZerOS consoles, including FLX, FLX S24 & FLX S48, ZerOS allows fixtures to be patched across 64 universes without wasting unused channels. Any two of these universes can be sent out over the two DMX outputs. The total number of used channels across the 64 universes must not exceed the number of universes your console is licensed to output.

So you should be good to go...

If you try to patch a new fixture are you able to assign the channels to Universe 2 and then assign Universe 2 to say the 3-pin XLR?

I haven’t received the desk yet so can’t prove it works, but I expect it will do. the other part of the manual is probably just asserting the default state. Thanks for that.

Yes, you will be able to patch onto any of the 64 universes, and then route this universe from port 2 for example, on a 1 universe FLX S24. You won't be able to patch more than 512 channels across the available universes on a 1 universe FLX S24.
